Mugwort was used in the Middle Ages to ward off evil possession and was a popular stuffing for roast goose. As the name implies, it was traditionally used in mugs of beer. Europeans frequently stuffed pillows with mugwort (and hops) to bring good and vivid dreams. It was the primary bittering herb before the use of hops became popular to bitter beers, and provides adequate bittering for a 5 gallon batch with a dosage of .5-1oz .
